Color
and pattern however, is not what is so special about a Ragdoll.
Ragdolls like to cuddle and snuggle. Like little puppies, they
follow you around the house and want to be included in family
activities which is what makes them such excellent pets for
children, adults and the elderly. Once introduced they
get along well with other animals in the house... and they don't
take long to adapt to a new family. Ragdolls are a quiet, gentle and
docile breed that will win your love in a heartbeat.
Ragdolls are actually bred for that sweet/mild temperament.
Many ragdoll owners choose to start early and dress their babies
while others leash train their cats so they can walk them. Ragdolls don't shed as much as other
medium to long haired breeds so they are
easier to take care of. This intelligent breed is smart enough
to retrieve toys, they are affectionate, loyal creatures that will
bring you and your family joy for years to come.
These cats are slow to mature and don't get to their
full weight until about three years. Neutered males can weigh
up to 20 pounds and spayed females can weigh up to 12 or over.
This breed of cat gets their name because when you hold them
in your arms, they often go limp... hence the name - Ragdoll.
Many stories about the origin and development of the
Ragdoll breed exist. The most common belief and one that everyone
agrees upon is that a woman named Ann Baker in Riverside California
developed the breed from three feral cats. Ms. Baker noticed that a
feral cat named Josephine had some very special qualities and that
her litters had those same qualities. She obtained a kitten from
Josephine and began the breed in the 1960’s.
The minks and solids were started right along with the traditionals
in Ann Bakers breeding programs.
Minks and
solids have aqua, green or yellow-orange eyes but are just as
stunningly beautiful as the traditional blue eyes and are very, very
rare to find. Some ragdoll breeders don't believe in breeding
solids and minks which is why they are rare but I enjoy the variety of color in these cats.
The minks are exquisitely beautiful and hardly shed at all.
Their fur is soft like rabbit fur and they have the same great
personality and nature as the traditionals. Solids are
even more rare than minks and they can come in smoked grey,
orange tabby, black and white, black, creams, calico (tortie) and
various other colors that are stunning and sleek...and they come in
all the different patterns, each with it's own unique look.
